I initially decided to get a Unii Palette for going travelling to Australia last year because, although I was taking a full MAC Palette with me in my case, I needed to take just a few shadows and a blusher with me en route to fix my makeup on the plane so therefore the Unii looked perfect due to it being nice and compact and having a mirror included in the lid. Needless to say it's been around the world with me and back and it's probably taken quite a battering along the way too so I'm pleased to say I can give a very honest opinion of how it upholds and also how it compares to a couple of the other popular palettes.
First off the pros: It's compact so great for throwing in a handbag, it has a large mirror in the lid so again great for travelling with, the magnetized base could be a bit stronger but it's still quite good, the aesthetic design is great - you can choose from several colours and from the outside I think it looks like a piece of technological equipment!
The cons: Unfortunately I found that there is too much space between the eyeshadows and the lid when the lid is closed. This means that the shadows can rattle around and if it's dropped, since the shadows are not snug against the lid, they can break easily from the impact (I lost a few MAC eyeshadows and a NARS blush due to this!). Another con is that it's not a palette that would be suited to make-up artists. Due to the reason above it more than likely would not withstand rattling around a train case and it's compact size also means it wouldn't hold enough eyeshadows/blushers for those who may want to use it on a professional basis.
Comparison to the MAC and Z Palettes: As you can see it's smaller than both the MAC and Z Palettes which can be either a good or bad thing depending on what you want to use it for. It has a mirror in the lid which neither of the other two palettes have which is good for personal use but a bit redundant for professional use. The space between the eyeshadows and the lid when closed is greater in the Unii than in either of the others so unfortunately for the contents of the Unii they will rattle around and become dislodged more and may not withstand being dropped. I have dropped both the MAC and Z Palettes without much of a problem (the Z Palette coming out on top with zero products ever being broken!). The Unii is the most expensive out of the three, the MAC being the least expensive.
Overall it's a nice palette for personal use. I like its appearance and it's useful for going away on a weekend break. I also like it for storing my most used eyeshadows so that I have them all in one place if I'm in a hurry in the mornings. However it's not one I'd recommend for professional use or for the make-up addicts who need mass storage for their excessive amount of depots!
I bought this from uniicometics.com for $29 (about €23).

I agree, it's a nice palette for personal use. I think the biggest selling point here is the packaging. If you really like the look of this one and think it's cute (it is for me) then it's a reason to prefer it over the others.
ReplyDeleteHi Heather, I enjoyed this review--- I thought the point about the space between shadows and lid was interesting; it's not one I'd heard before and I'm glad I know it now!
ReplyDeleteOh, it's too bad the eyeshadows rattle around because I'd hate that and I'd definitely hate losing my MAC shadows! But I love the design! Hopefully they can redesign the palette with a stronger magnet and less space between the MAC eyeshadows, then I would totally buy it!
ReplyDeleteI know I was devastated when a few of mine broke along with my NARS blush :( they are very cool looking though!
DeleteThank god I saw ur review cause I was just about to buy one. But the space thing sounds bad! xx
ReplyDeleteYeah it's not great which is unfortunate as I like it otherwise.
Deleteit looks like such a lovely colour
ReplyDeleteHave you tried Yaby palettes? They are compact with strong magnets and the space above the pans on mine doesn't look as large as yours. I haven't tried the Z, MAC or Unii so can't provide comparisons but thought I'd share this option as it works well for me. I got mine online from Camera Ready Cosmetics.
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried the yaby but I must look into it, thank you :D I also want to try the makeup forever empty magnetised one.
